An R-502 Alternative Refrigerant for Low-Temperature Systems
Freon™ HP81 (R-402B) refrigerant is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) retrofit option that acts as a dependable, nonflammable alternative to R-502. Used in limited low-temperature refrigeration applications, this retrofit refrigerant has an ASHRAE A1 safety classification.
Freon™ HP81 delivers comparable cooling characteristics to R-502 and is used in systems that need a 5.5 to 11 °C (10 to 20 °F) increase in compressor discharge temperature. Examples include:
- Vending machines
- Food service equipment
- Other self-contained systems
Features and Benefits
Freon™ HP81 works with existing mineral oil (MO), and many retrofitted unitary and close-coupled systems which do not require an oil change. Some original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) do, however, recommend switching from mineral oil to alkylbenzene (AB) oil for optimum oil return. After changing to AB oil, systems may require 10-25% less refrigerant.
Regulations on the long-term use of refrigerants vary by region and application, and may change over time. For the latest information, please visit our Regulations page.
