A Retrofit Refrigerant for Very Low Temperature Equipment
The Freon™ refrigerant portfolio includes Freon™ 23 (R-23) refrigerant for equipment that needs to maintain very low temperatures (VLT), such as medical freezers and environmental chambers. This hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) retrofit refrigerant is an effective alternative to R-13 and R-503 when temperatures must remain at or below -40 to -73 °C (-40 to -100 °F). Most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of systems using R-23 recommend using polyolester (POE) oils. Consult your OEM to determine whether your system requires an oil change or any other system modifications.
Features and Benefits
Freon™ 23 also works when retrofitting existing systems that use R-13 and R-503, sometimes with slight system modifications required. Freon™ 23 is a nonflammable refrigerant that works well in applications where a high compressor discharge temperature is not a concern. Freon™ 23 offers:
- Similar properties to R-13 and R-502
- Zero ozone depletion potential
- An ASHRAE A1 safety classification
